CHAPTER 20

JAMISON

There’s no turning back now even if I wanted to. The ink is dry, and my life is about to change drastically.

I’ve always imagined something like this, but sitting in Hunter’s office and putting my billion-dollar idea into motion is surreal.

Hunter reclines in his chair. “Now that the contracts are signed, you’re officially part of Efron Worldwide Casino Corporation. At least for the foreseeable future. Welcome aboard.”

“Thanks. It’s good to be here, but I feel like I’ve been working for the company for a while.” I prop my ankle on top of my knee. “What’s on the agenda for today?”

“You’ll need to start working with our marketing director. She’s prepared the design specs and has the branding you’ll need to incorporate into the software for the app.”

“Sounds good to me. We’re at the point where we need to start plugging that information into the coding.”

“Great. Well, Jamison, I have some good news and some bad news. Which would you like first?”

I grunt a laugh. “Way to start the day. Give me the bad news first.”

“We’re stretched to the limit on office space, so we don’t have a designated office for you.”

“Then where would you like me to work?”

“That leads us to the good news. Our director of marketing says she doesn’t need much space, so she’s willing to share her office with you. It works out well since you’ll need information from her daily. The maintenance crew’s setting up everything today. They’re bringing in an extra desk and making the room conducive for two people to work effectively.”

“Sounds good to me.”

“In that case, let’s go meet her. She should be in the conference room.” He stands and strides to the door of his office.

I follow him. “Let’s do it.”

We take the elevator down to the floor below the executive office. When we step off the elevator, I immediately notice a familiar smell, but it’s too faint for me to place. The closer we get to the conference room, the stronger it becomes.

The room’s only a few steps from the elevator, so there’s not much time for me to make the connection. As soon as we step into the meeting space, my world turns upside down. Dori’s perfume pleasantly drifts around me.

For a second, I think I’m dreaming as I’m taken back to the first time she wore that fragrance. I thought I was going to rip off her dress right there in front of her brother.

Reality slams into me when she comes into full view. I blink to make sure it’s really her. I can only make out her profile, as she’s arranging beverages and bagels on the table.

She picks up a bottle of water she’s drinking from and takes a gulp. My brain’s still trying to comprehend what’s going on around me.

Hunter clears his throat. “Dorothy, I’d like you to meet the owner of JST International.”

She turns with a smile, and my stomach falls to the center of the earth. As soon as she sees me, her face pales, and her expression flatlines.
